We pride ourselves on keeping up to date and in the know when it comes to developments within our industry, whether it be innovative technologies, new skincare products/treatments and generally keeping our finger on the pulse of all things skin. Lauren and Bryony travelled to the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians SKINCON 2023 in Melbourne last month and they share some of their conference takeaways and inspiring tidbits below…
There was an excellent selection of industry speakers at SKINCON23 – who were you particularly impressed by?
BRYONY: I always enjoy listening to other business owners, hearing about their journey in the industry, how they position themselves and how they choose to treat their clients. There were a few interesting products we saw and are doing further investigation on….stay tuned!
We’re always on the lookout for the newest innovations and technologies in skincare – what excited you most?
LAUREN: A question I am often asked is: “What’s new and exciting in skin?”. To be honest a lot of the technologies out there have been around for some time, and so, current advances are about improving those technologies, making them safer and more efficacious. It’s really more about ‘tweaking’ existing treatments/technologies. I have focused on peels over the last decade or so, as this is where I have experienced solid, long-term results. I’m excited about some other types of peels we are about to start working with at TFP very soon!
In terms of skin ranges, we are constantly trialling new products in the background, and if they don’t offer better solutions than the ranges we currently have, then we don’t take them on. That said, I have my eye on a couple of things, including different peeling options, to which the before and after photos show fabulous results, but of course, this will go through rigorous testing before we offer it in clinic.
There have been some fantastic developments in wound healing technologies, derived from beta-glucan. This ensures you get the best outcome with the healing process, whether it be from an injury or a skin treatment. It’s essential your skin is in the best possible condition when you have treatments that induce a ‘wound healing effect’, this is done through topical Vitamin A, antioxidants and peptides, and that you have the best aftercare to give you the best possible outcome. Many treatments rely on our body’s natural wound-healing process, the treatment creates an injury and the body repairs and lays down new collagen. If your skin isn’t healthy prior to treatment then it’s not going to do this particularly well or to its full potential.
Peels are underutilised in the skin industry in my opinion, with the option of other technologies, but they can achieve some stunning results, some very gradually with little downtime, while others have more radical results, but may induce a week of downtime. We have some exciting new peels coming to you soon, offering enhanced results addressing pigmentation, lines and texture. We are also looking at adding some other technologies to our arsenal, and are currently in the testing stage, so watch this space!
What were some of the upcoming skin trends that we should be looking out for that you picked up on at the conference?
BRYONY: I really dislike trends within the industry. I feel it’s important to cater to what clients are asking for but equally, I strongly feel we should be educating clients as to what is best for THEIR skin and not following something they heard about on a social media platform!
