The Benefits of Skin Needling

We love Microneedling! It is an incredibly safe treatment with fantastic outcomes for scarring, acne, acne scarring and skin rejuvenation. It is very safe with darker skin types, where the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation is very high, as opposed to some other treatments that damage the epidermis. Every skin type will benefit as it relies on inducing a natural process in the skin, without damaging the surface of the skin and causing potential negative side effects such as hyperpigment or scarring. Given that needling is inducing a natural metabolic process in the skin, it is important to highlight the benefits of getting your skin healthy through topical nutrition first; the healthier your skin, the better it will respond to the needling treatment. This is why we insist on a minimum prep time of a month, to ensure we get the best results for you.

Did you know that Microneedling or Collagen Induction Therapy can be done in summer as it does not cause photosensitivity?

Microneedling involves micro-fine needles that push the skin cells aside and puncture the capillaries to launch a cascade of growth factors that repair, reset, and lay down new collagen. Part of ageing involves the thickening of the very surface of the skin, thinning of the epidermis and the ‘flattening’ of the junction between the epidermis and dermis; this contributes to poor nourishment of the epidermis and the decreased adhesion creates skin laxity. Another condition of ageing and thinning skin is increased vascularity, where general redness and capillaries become apparent. Needling also induces something called angiogenesis, where new, strengthened capillaries are formed.

It is important to know what you are getting with needling: is it ‘Cosmetic’ needling or ‘Medical’ needling? Cosmetic needling is a lesser depth, often done without anaesthetic, and mainly for product absorption with no collagen remodelling. Medical needling will create a pinpoint bleed, often done with topical anaesthetic and is sufficient depth to cause a pinpoint bleed, inducing the wound healing cascade and ultimately collagen induction. The endpoint is often an even dense redness at the end of treatment. Frequency is also important; we suggest a treatment every 4-6 weeks as this has the ability to increase skin thickness by 140%. Less treatments will obviously improve the skin, but not optimise the treatments potential. When skin is thickened through collagen and elastin production, it pads out fine lines and wrinkles, reduces pores size, and improves general skin texture and laxity.
