To be an excellent “injector” you are required to have a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, danger zones, aesthetics, and the process of ageing. Excellent communication skills and possessing the varied and technical skills to be able to deliver consistent results are also obviously necessary. However, to be a safe and proficient clinician, you need not only all of the above skills, but also just as importantly, the ability to asses the physical and emotional wants and needs of your client, problem solve an agreeable outcome and to be able to bring this altogether during your consultation! 

Part of the initial consultation for injectables includes a medical assessment where we screen for specific past or present health conditions that are either contraindications or precautions for Botox or Dermal Fillers. Often if you are not suitable for dermal filler you may be suitable for BotoxⓇ or an alternative procedure such as PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma). A common example of where we might refuse you on medical grounds is if you have made a dermal filler appointment and you are sick with a cough, cold or virus. We then deem it necessary to reschedule your appointment for when you are 100% better. 

Another part of the initial consultation includes discussing upcoming lifestyle factors. We choose not to treat anyone with very close timeframes to important events e.g. weddings, public functions etc, as you can experience some common needle-related side effects such as bruising, redness and swelling. These are usually well tolerated but wouldn’t be if you were a bride a few days before your wedding, so please plan your appointments in advance! Additionally, if you did experience a very rare side effect this could be catastrophic, it really isn’t worth it for a subtle cosmetic change – again we will always think about what is best for you. 

For dermal filler, we also require patients to avoid any dental work for one month after treatment (as it can increase your risk of infection) and not to travel internationally for 1-2 weeks after treatment. If you experienced a side effect and were overseas we wouldn’t be able to care for you to the best of our ability. As we all follow best practice guidelines, you will see that we always will lean on the side of caution. The same is true regarding dermal filler and any vaccines – we require a 2-week window before and after any vaccine.

Lastly, a large part of the consultation process is the fun part, your individualised assessment. This is where you tell us your concerns, goals, and expectations of treatment and we discuss what we see, what we would advise and whether we believe it is achievable. Occasionally clients may come in with specific aesthetic goals in mind, for example wanting larger than life lips. You only see lips, we see proportions, symmetry, and balance. How you look when you smile and move your face and how you look on profile must also be taken into account. We have been assessing your face since we said “hello” and if we feel the enhancement would not balance with the rest of your face, or the results you want are not achievable; please don’t be offended If we refuse to treat you.
