If you are on a quest for radiant, youthful skin, the Exion RF needling Device from BTL might be the perfect treatment for you. This treatment blends micro needling with radio frequency ( RF) and ultrasound technology, enhanced with Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deliver noticeable results with minimal downtime.
Let’s explore how the Exion RF needling device works, the skin issues it can treat and what you can expect as a client.
How it works
The Exion RF needling device combines three powerful skincare technologies to rejuvenate and revitalise your skin:
1. Micro-needling: As the needles penetrate the skin, they create controlled micro-injuries or micro-channels in the dermis. These micro-injuries stimulate the skin’s natural healing processes.
Stimulation of Collagen Production: The micro-injuries caused by the needles trigger the skin to produce new collagen and elastin fibres. Collagen is crucial for maintaining skin structure and elasticity, while elastin helps the skin to snap back into place.
Overall Skin Rejuvenation: By promoting collagen production and improving skin texture, micro needling can lead to smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin. It can reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and hyperpigmentation.
2. Radio frequency energy: Simultaneously, RF energy is delivered deep into your skin through these micro needles. In the context of BTL’s Exion RF Needling device, the radiofrequency (RF) energy serves several specific purposes:
Heating the Tissue: RF energy heats the deeper layers of the skin (dermis) without causing damage to the outer layer (epidermis). This controlled heating stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin.
Collagen Remodelling: The heat generated by RF energy induces collagen remodelling and contraction. This process helps to tighten existing collagen fibres and encourages the formation of new collagen, which is essential for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity.
Skin Tightening: By stimulating collagen production and remodelling, RF energy can lead to overall skin tightening and improvement in skin laxity. This is particularly beneficial for areas of the face and body where skin may have lost elasticity due to aging or other factors.
Reducing Wrinkles and Fine Lines: The tightening effect of RF energy can help to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, resulting in a more youthful appearance.
Enhancing Treatment Outcomes: When combined with microneedling (as in the Exion RF Needling device), RF energy can enhance the results of the micro-injuries caused by the needles. The synergistic action of RF and microneedling stimulates deeper layers of the skin more effectively than either treatment alone.
3. AI Technology is what sets the Exion device apart from other devices. The device uses AI to read and analyse your skin in real time, ensuring the treatment is tailored to your unique skin needs. The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a significant role in enhancing treatment outcomes and optimizing the client’s experience. Here are some ways AI is utilized in conjunction with micro needling and RF technology:
Customized Treatment Planning: AI algorithms can analyze various factors such as skin type, condition, and desired outcomes to customize treatment parameters. This includes determining the optimal depth of microneedling, intensity of RF energy, and duration of treatment based on individual skin characteristics. By tailoring treatments to each patient’s specific needs, AI helps to maximize effectiveness and minimize potential side effects.
Real-time Feedback and Adjustment: During the treatment session, AI can provide real-time feedback based on sensor data and patient response. This may include monitoring skin temperature, impedance (resistance to electrical current), and other parameters to ensure that the treatment remains within safe and effective limits. AI algorithms can also dynamically adjust treatment parameters as needed to achieve optimal results.
Overall, AI integration in BTL’s Exion RF Needling device enhances treatment precision, personalization, and effectiveness, contributing to improved outcomes and patient satisfaction in non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedures.
What it treats
The Exion RF needling device is incredibly versatile and can address a wide range of skin issues including:
Wrinkles and fine lines: the treatment stimulates collagen production, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines for smoother firmer skin
Acne scars: Micro needling breaks down scar tissue, while RF energy promotes the growth of new healthy skin, helping to diminish acne scars
Stretch marks: Whether from growth spurts, pregnancy or weight changes stretch marks can be minimised effectively
Skin tightening: the RF energy helps to tighten loose or sagging skin giving you a more lifted and youthful appearance
Large pores: the treatment can help minimize enlarged pores leaving your skin looking more refined and smoother
Hyperpigmentation: The skins rejuvenation process can help even out dark spots resulting in a more radiant complexion
What to expect as a client during treatment:
Procedure:A treatment will take around 30-60 minutes depending on the area being treated. You will feel prickling and warmth to the skin, but it shouldn’t be painful. If you do find it uncomfortable, we do have the option of numbing cream. The AI Technology will be continuously reading your skin to ensure a thorough safe treatment.
After the treatment: You may notice some minor redness and swelling after your session. Some individuals return to work immediately, while others may choose to take the remainder of the day off to allow the redness to fade. Most people’s skin returns to normal within a day or two, and you can apply makeup the day after treatment to cover any remaining redness.
Results: Initial improvements appear over the coming weeks and months. We recommend a course of treatments for optimal results.
So, if you’re ready to say hello to smoother, firmer, tighter and more radiant skin, the Exion RF needling device from BTL could be your new best friend on your skin journey.
If this sounds like a treatment you’re interested in, book a consultation with one of our qualified medical skin therapists and start your path to beautiful glowing skin. Trust me, your future self will thank you for it.
We have only been in the new Quay St clinic for a few weeks, but the team have settled in beautifully and it’s a fabulous new space! If you haven’t been in yet, I’d highly recommend making an appointment just so you can check it out 😹. It still needs some art on the walls and our team’s certificates hung in their rooms, but our team has worked so incredibly hard to move out of our old Britomart Clinic and to create a place of relaxation and beauty in this new space, which is so light and spacious. They are loving it – especially the views of the water – and I am so incredibly proud of them and what they have created.
If you came into either of the clinics last Tuesday you might have seen some very glamorous-looking team members around the clinic. We had a super fun photo shoot for the team at the new clinic last week, with each of the team getting glammed up by hair and makeup artists (including my favourite @ranishortland_makeup artist) before having their new headshots taken by the always wonderful @kennedynz. Our Takapuna team took turns at coming over for their photos, so they were glammed up too. Sadly we couldn’t have the whole team in one place for a group photo, but we got some great shots of the new clinic that you’ll be starting to see come up on social media. If you haven’t checked it out yet, follow @thefaceplacenz on IG 🤩
I talked last month about how we were bringing new technologies into the clinic with the Emsella Chair and Exion RF needling. We are delighted that they are now available to be booked in the Quay St clinic, so ask your clinician if they might be appropriate for you, or book an appointment for a consultation.
As a reminder, the Emsella is an innovative chair that can improve your pelvic floor by stimulating over 11,000 kegels in 28 minutes, all with your clothes on! Both men and women experience benefits from this treatment with improved sexual enjoyment and function, as well as a reduction in incontinence from a leaky bladder. It also works really well alongside our other sexual rejuvenation treatments such as O-Shot, P-Shot and ThermiVa. If you have any metal implants in the pelvis, or mesh repairs, then sadly this treatment is not for you.
Where Emsella is focused on pelvic function, Exion has a range of treatments available on its platform, from AI-controlled RF needling to help improve skin texture to the simultaneous RF and ultrasound, which studies show can increase hyaluronic acid in the skin by 223%, improving the plumpness and ‘glow’ of the skin. Research presented at the recent ASAPS Non-Surgical Symposium in the Gold Coast showed that treatment with the RF-USS showed a 94.4% improvement in skin quality, 41% improved skin texture and 23% more skin hydration. There is also a ‘Body’ hand piece that can be used for fat reduction… more on that next month!
I attended ASAPS NSS with Lauren, Eve and Marilou, and it was an excellent conference. It was so lovely to be working alongside the rest of the team, each of us choosing the sessions we wanted to attend, and then catching up afterwards and comparing notes!
In addition to exploring the new research on the Exion, I also got to trial the new EmFace Submental applicator – designed for enhancing the chin and jawline. The Submental applicator not only uses HIFES to stimulate the digastric muscles to tighten the under chin area, the simultaneous radiofrequency in the treatment pad heats the tissues slightly higher than it does on the cheeks, to the temperature that stimulates apoptosis (death of) the fat cells in this area. This means the EmFace Submental helps to both tighten the pouchy neck and define the chin and jawline.
It feels a bit like someone is taking the muscle just under your chin and twisting it, but to be honest, I don’t mind the sensation 😹 You can have either the submental applicator and cheek applicator on at the same time (like I chose to) or the submental applicator and forehead applicator on at the same time, but if you want all 3 treatments in one session you have to do another 20 minute session that day as the machine can only supply 2 applicators at a time.
Trialling the EmFace Submental Applicator
Marilou, Eve, Lauren and I at the ASAPS NSS in the Gold Coast
One of the stand out sessions for the injecting team at ASAPS NSS was the Profhilo workshop showcasing Profhilo around the mouth and in some other interesting areas. We will be trialling these techniques at our upcoming team training day before deciding whether we offer them for patients, but they are promising. There’s also an exciting new Profhilo product being launched in August called Profhilo Structura. I was introduced to this on my Profhilo ‘Train The Trainer’ trip to Dubai recently, so am super excited to see it soon being available in NZ.
Our team is now fully trained up on Viscoderm Hydrobooster – the unique filling product made by the same company as Profhilo – which can soften the dynamic (created by movement) and early static lines (the lines that stay), as well as being used in the rest of the skin of the face as a skin booster to improve plumpness, collagen and elastin. A syringe goes a REALLY long way! I see this being an excellent product for those pesky forehead lines in people who Botox drops their brows, or who want to retain movement in their forehead, and to fill the lines around the mouth without the skin getting ‘bulky’ from too much filler. It has also been shown to synergistically work with Profhilo to create even more hydration, plumpness and collagen, so we have a fun new package which combines Profhilo and Viscoderm Hydrobooster. The team is currently trying to come up with an appropriate name for it!
We have our team training day coming up, which is where the team gets together for a day to play with new techniques and products on our team members, so we can get honest feedback and also see what impact – good or bad – the new treatments have. One of our product core values is that we won’t use anything on you that we haven’t trialled on ourselves! We have quite a list of things to trial this Team Training Day, both from the ASAPS NSS conference, other trainings the team have attended, and our recent Vampire Academy, which Tina and Janny attended to learn the Vampire Facial, Vampire Facelift, Vampire Breastlift, O- Shot and P- Shot. They both did a wonderful job of injecting, alongside our external attendees. Marjorie did a fabulous job of organising the academy and assisting me for the 2 day workshop, and once again we scored 10/10 from every attendee on the feedback rating. Congratulations Marj, Janny and Tina, it was a highly successful weekend! For injectors who are interested, we have another Vampire Academy coming up in October.
It’s been a big month of training since I’ve been back, as I also facilitated some training for Allergan (the makers of Botox and Juvederm) on Monday, for about 20+ injectors ranging in experience from less than a year to over 14 years. The training was focused on the importance on consultation and assessment, which are topics dear to my heart, and it is always such an honour to influence others in the industry as part of their learning journey.
We are also trialling quite a few different products in the background, to see if they offer enough benefit for us to consider offering them. They have fulfilled our product values of safe, simple, effective, naturally based and medically proven – now we are doing the trials to determine if they are high reward/low drama and good value for money. We trial the treatments across different types of people and when assessing the results we consider whether it gives different or better results to what we already offer, before we consider providing it in clinic. We often get asked why we don’t provide ‘ X’ in clinic, and usually it’s because we have trialed it and it hasn’t fulfilled our stringent criteria.
Vampire Academy Training Day!
Birthday Celebrations in the Gold Coast
While at ASAPS NSS in the Gold Coast, I had the second of my 50th birthday celebrations – a gorgeous lunch with a small group of close friends who have moved to the GC over the years. I feel so incredibly blessed as I’ve been friends with each of them for between 15 and 25 years! I’m so grateful to have lived to my 50th year, to have an incredible team (who moved everything to our new clinic while I was in a different country), and to have wonderful patients and a business that positively changes people’s lives.
Thank you, as always, for your support of me and our amazing team,
From June 13-15, 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to attend NSS 2024 (Non Surgical Symposium) held at the stunning Gold Coast. The conference was a remarkable blend of cutting edge presentations, hands-on workshops, and invaluable insights, making it a pivotal event for anyone involved the field of Cosmetic Medicine.
The conference featured enlightening presentation sessions, some of which are Emface and Profhilo– two groundbreaking treatments that are making waves in the industry. These sessions were particularly engaging, offering in-depth analysis and discussions on their efficacy, application, and future potential.
One of the standout experience was engaging in the Teoxane Village workshops. These sessions offered live injecting and in-depth discussions on various products and techniques. It was an excellent opportunity to refine my skills and learn directly from leading experts in the field. Additionally, the sessions were a great setting for networking, allowing me to connect with fellow medical professionals and exchanges ideas and experiences.
Key Takeaways
A significant takeaway from the conference was the critical role of photography in achieving high quality before and after photos. Good before and after photos are essential for documenting progress and showcasing the results of treatments. The talk about photography underscored the importance of consistency and accuracy in capturing these images, highlighting it as a key component of effective practice.
Another major highlight was the trend of skin boosters in cosmetic medicine. These treatments (such as Profhilo) are gaining popularity for their ability to rejuvenate and enhance skin quality, with minimal invasiveness. The insights provided on skin boosters were both informative and inspiring, showcasing their growing importance in cosmetic medicine.
The NSS conference was a thoroughly enriching experience. It was a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, delivered by some of the leading experts in the field. The event was well organized and truly inspiring, reaffirming TFP’s commitment in staying at the forefront of the cosmetic industry.

As a nurse trainer, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of our Complications Grand Round Workshop. In our field, while we always strive for the best outcomes; complications are an inevitable part of medical practice. Understanding how to effectively manage and mitigate these complications is critical. This knowledge ensures that we can provide the highest standard of care, maintain patient trust, and uphold our professional integrity. I can personally attest to the profound impact that mastering complication management has had on my career. Early in my practice, I encountered a challenging complication that tested my skills and resilience. By sharing with my peers and application of complication management techniques, I was able to navigate the situation successfully with no long term sequalae for the patient. This experience not only enhanced my technical abilities but also reinforced my confidence and decision-making skills. So, if you’re contemplating whether to join our workshop and why complication management is important in your practice, let me share some compelling reasons why this workshop is an invaluable opportunity for your professional growth and confidence.
1. Boost Your Confidence
When I attended last year’s Grand Round workshop, it significantly boosted my confidence. Handling complications can be daunting, especially in high-pressure situations. Preparing one of my complicated cases that fell into a grey area and exploring the research for updated recommendations, then presenting the case to my peers along with what I might do in future when faced with a similar case was a highly rewarding experience, and valuable in helping me use the research update process in my every day clinical practice. I also gained a lot of new insights and updated knowledge about less common complications while listening to my colleagues present their cases on the day. This preparation is key to building the confidence needed to manage complications effectively in our daily practice.
2. Learn from Others’ Experiences
One of the most enriching aspects of the workshop is the opportunity to learn from others. Our sessions include sharing and analysing real-life experiences from other nurse injectors and doctors. These stories offer invaluable insights and lessons that you won’t find in textbooks. Understanding how others have navigated challenging situations equips you with a broader perspective and a wealth of knowledge to draw upon when faced with similar circumstances.
3. Enhance Your Competence
Competence in dealing with complications is a crucial aspect of cosmetic practice. The workshop focuses on developing the critical thinking abilities necessary for effective complication management. You’ll engage in discussions designed to enhance your technical and decision-making skills. By the end of the workshop, you’ll feel more equipped and capable of handling complications with expertise and precision.
4. Build a Supportive Network
Another significant benefit of attending the workshop is connecting with a supportive group of peers and mentors. Cosmetic medicine can sometimes feel isolating, especially when dealing with tough cases. Our workshop fosters a community where you can share experiences, seek advice, and offer support. This network becomes a valuable resource, providing emotional and professional support during emergencies or challenging situations.
5. Experience Real-Life Scenarios
Engaging with real-life case situations offers a profound learning experience by immersing our attendees in authentic, complex scenarios that mirror challenges they might encounter in their professional lives. This approach enhances problem-solving skills as participants analyse real events, consider multiple perspectives, and devise practical solutions. Furthermore, it improves decision-making abilities by requiring practitioners to weigh the consequences of their actions in a realistic context. Also, real-life case situations promote teamwork and communication, as each must collaborate and articulate their thoughts clearly. Overall, this method fosters a deeper understanding of subject matter, preparing practitioners for real-world complexities more effectively than theoretical learning alone.
So, are you ready to take the next step?
Attending our Complications Grand Round Workshop is more than just a learning opportunity; it’s an investment in your professional development. You’ll walk away with increased confidence, enhanced competence, a wealth of knowledge from shared experiences, and a supportive network to rely on.
Join us and take the next step in becoming a more confident, competent, and connected practitioner. Sign up for our Complications Grand Round Workshop today!
