Lauren’s Ski Trip Skin Routine

Lauren’s Ski Trip Skin Routine

With many of us heading away for a snow trip this winter, our skin guru sets the record straight on keeping your skin healthy and protected when hitting the slopes…

I’m excited it’s snowboarding season again! I love the break in routine, the adventure, adrenaline and getting back to nature. Of course, the cold and heat play havoc with the skin and I do end up looking like a beetroot by the end of the day. Now is not the time to be letting up on skincare and sunscreen!

Here are the three key steps to my routine:

1. Antioxidants for protection
The skiing environment is a breeding ground for free radicals with the extreme UV on the mountain, the reflection off the snow and extended time outside. Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause a cascade of damage and antioxidants will stabilise that process halting the damage. Really important antioxidants are Vitamin C and B, so make sure these go on before your sunscreen in the morning.

2. Apply sunscreen, repeat and rescue
Apply sunscreen every 2 hours and more frequently if your face gets wet or you are sweating. For me the liposomal sunscreen Heliocare) has been a game changer – it truly are the most efficacious sunscreen formula I’ve used.

In addition to sunscreen, I will take my Cosmedix Rescue Balm to create a barrier that helps with transepidermal water loss. The cold air and the transitioning between heating and getting hot with exercise leaches hydration from the skin so reapplying a barrier, as well as sunscreen, will keep more moisture in the skin.

3. Repair & hydrate
You may be exhausted after a day of adventure but don’t skip the night routine as this is an important time for the skin to repair. Remember, Vitamin A is a key player in repair as well as peptides and antioxidants to further reduce the inflammation created through the day. I also add in a hydrating mask that I leave on over my serums at night.

Dr Cat’s News Update August 2022

August is a big celebration this year as we celebrate being in business for 21 years – and you get the goodies!! We have an incredible prize pack for one lucky winner!

All you need to do to get in the draw is have an appointment with us during August or September. We are booking up fast already, so get in quick if you’d like a chance at winning! What’s in the prize pack? It’s a plethora of goodies I’d love to have myself, as so many of my favourite things are in there!

If you happen to be the lucky winner you’ll receive a $500 credit on your TFP account, and a fabulous AST skincare package; a one-night stay at The Hotel Britomart, where you can pop down and use your $150 dinner voucher at either one of my favourite restaurants – Cafe Hanoi for Vietnamese, or her Chinese street food sister, Ghost Street as both are tucked just under the Britomart hotel. You can follow up dinner with a delicious Giapo ice cream voucher (if you follow @drcatstone on IG, you guys know it’s my favourite ice cream!); and for a bit of fun for you or a friend, you’ll get a Missy Mini vibrator from @girlsgetoff! We are all about intimate wellness and pleasure, and absolutely love (and giggle at) their fabulous IG 😹💗 Check it out, if you dare!

Our birthday celebration begins – be sure to book in August or September to be in the draw to win!

We also have some great deals and giveaways e.g. if you spend over $500 in-clinic in one transaction with us during August or September, we’ll gift you our amazingly delicious and healthy recipe book ‘Grow Younger With Great Food’, authored by holistic nutritionist Jessica Giljam-Brown and me, with up to date nutritional and lifestyle advice on what to eat to help balance hormones, increase energy and keep your body fit, healthy and youthful. It also has over 70 of our favourite healthy, quick and easy recipes – my faves at this time of year are the leftovers frittata, slow cooker sticky black rice and nutty chocolate fudge, but there are so many good ones to choose from! It’s a wonderful gift for Xmas or birthdays, and I love a birthday where you guys get the presents! Plus I’m a big believer in a birthday month (or longer 😹).

I actually officially started The Face Place in late 2000/early 2001, and first registered the business in June 2001, but we are celebrating our 21st official birthday this month and September, as it’s my birthday month, along with a large proportion of my best friends!

I’ll be meeting two of my birthday besties in Bali this month to celebrate our birthdays, and I also get to stay in the wonderful new sanctuary that has been built at my favourite retreat for women, Escape Haven. This will be my 5th stay with Escape Haven, and I’m excited and delighted to try their new ‘Ayurvedic healing’ retreat, with daily practices and a mix of Ayurvedic and Balinese spa treatments and healing sessions! They’ve built an amazing saltwater pool with a fire pit, for Balinese fire ceremonies, and some new Jacuzzi suites with a private Jacuzzi (although I think I missed out on one of those unfortunately 🥲). Their new private spa area looks blissfully divine! You can check them out on IG @escapehaven or have a look at their website www.escapehaven.com to explore the different types of retreats they offer. So far I’ve done the surf package, yoga package, detox package and bucket list package, so I’m working through their list pretty well! I can’t wait for some beautiful Bali sun, healthy food and incredible healing and spa treatments – my body is so ready for the bliss!

This last month has been a lot tougher than I expected, as the fatigue has hit me again, especially last week. A couple of weeks ago I managed to run our Profhilo Workshop with the wonderful support of two of our senior nurses, Marjorie and Esme, and we got to teach the Profhilo Body techniques for hands, arms, knees and tummy skin as a last-minute add-on to the planned face, neck and chest 1/2 day workshop. The official Profhilo Body launch will be in NZ at the end of August, with a 3ml syringe being launched specifically for the body (face and neck uses a 2ml syringe). It was super exciting to be able to share some of the knowledge from Paris IMCAS and provide a ‘teaser’ for what’s coming up! We have opened up dates for another Profhilo Workshop on 17 October, which will book up quickly. I’m delighted that once again we received a 10/10 rating in the feedback from every single participant!

Dr Cat – in full training mode.
Dr Cat and attendees at the recent Profhilo Workshop.

Last week I struggled my way through a short Volite training update for our team – luckily it was for our internal team and they are all experienced injectors, as I faded badly after the first couple of models, and then just observed the team working their magic. It’s fortunate that all were highly confident and competent in the techniques, and enjoyed the training while being very understanding of my struggle with fatigue and my need to curl up in a chair to observe them! 😹🤷‍♀️

The fatigue was so intense that I cancelled a planned trip to Queenstown over the weekend, and instead prioritised self-care – resting lots and meditating, reading, journaling or watching videos. Over the 3 days from Friday to Sunday I managed to go for a Healite, infrared sauna, massage, kundalini yoga session and float to try and recharge my batteries again, and I finally feel a bit better.

I’ve been slower to recover from the fatigue than I had thought I’d be, so I’m hoping that some healing time in Bali will be just what the doctor ordered! I’m so grateful for the incredible support from our team, especially the senior injectors who have been just amazing in supporting me in training, coaching and supporting our team. Our new GM, Nicci, has also been an absolute superstar settling into her role, meaning that I’m confident handing over most of the running of the business to her. Thank you, ladies, you make my life so much easier, so I can focus on the important things like training and supporting our team in the things that only I can do (for now) 🙏😻

Last month I talked about attending Paris IMCAS’s pre-conference training on aesthetic ultrasound, and this month we splashed out and invested in an aesthetic ultrasound! I’m excited and delighted that we are the first clinic in NZ to get the Clarius Portable L20 HD3 Aesthetic Ultrasound, and now I have to figure out how to use the damn thing! The ultrasound course was awesome, but it was just the beginning, and it didn’t teach important things like ‘how to charge the machine and turn it on’! I’ve got a 168-page manual to get my head around, and a bit of practice, but after finally figuring out how to turn it on, I was able to get some OK images of the temple, lip, chin and jawline last week. I’m looking forward to playing and practising with it a bit more over the next few weeks and months… we will probably start using it shortly to help us look at old filler to see where and what it is, and then move into using the ultrasound for training, mapping the blood vessels and managing complications. Within a year or two, it’s likely this will be seen as the gold standard for the cosmetic medicine industry, so it’s wonderful to be leading the way in NZ yet again.

Very exciting to receive the Clarius Portable L20 HD3 Aesthetic Ultrasound in clinic.

We continue to invest in ongoing education, with the skin team attending the Observ conference at The Cordis next week; Beck, Eve and Esme representing TFP at the NZSCM conference in Queenstown at the end of this month; and the rest of the medical team attending AMAC conference in Sydney in September. We have the Vampire Academy this weekend which will be a mix of our newer team members and industry nurses learning how to do the Vampire Facial®️, Vampire Facelift®️, Vampire Breastlift®️, O-Shot®️ and P-Shot®️. I am grateful that I’ll be supported by Kaitlin and Marj for the weekend and excited to have our full team soon able to provide these treatments.

Like many businesses, we are being hit with illnesses of both our team and our patients, so thank you for your patience with us, and the constant reshuffling that seems to be happening at the moment. Our team are really doing their best, so we appreciate your patience with them. You might notice we have some new team members answering the phones – Carla, MJ and Wyan are our newest employees and will be answering phones and emails to help our lovely front desk team focus on your customer experience while in the clinic. We are delighted to have them on board, and they’ve been keen to learn as much as possible from Treena and Sophie who have been teaching them the TFP way!

The fabulous news is that the days are starting to get longer again, and soon we will once again be coming into summer! Our team is still very booked up, so if you’re planning to get IPL this year, I’d recommend making your appointments soon, as we usually finish up IPL in early October, and with the Skin Team booked several weeks ahead, it will roll around faster than you realise!

We have our new anti-viral, anti-bacterial white overcoats finally being launched for our clinical teams this month, so keep an eye out for them! We are continuing with very strict protocols to reduce the risk of spreading Covid and flu’. Please look after yourself, and if you’re not well, please reschedule – we do have last-minute gaps that are coming up quite a bit at the moment due to last-minute cancellations, so keep an eye on social media where we’ll post any last-minute appointment availability’s on our @thefaceplacenz stories or give the team a call. We look forward to seeing you in-clinic and celebrating with you!

Sending so much love and healing hugs (especially once I get to Bali! 👙 ☀️ 🏝)

Love, Dr Cat 😻

Q&A With Our New GM Nicci Coleman

Q&A With Our New GM Nicci Coleman

With extensive industry experience and a very kind and caring persona, Nicci Coleman is the perfect person to take over the reins at The Face Place! We asked her a few burning questions to get to know her more.

You’ve had a long and stellar career in the industry. Tell us how you got your start?

From a very young age, I was passionate about skin and used creams and lotions daily to care for my skin. Mum would often tell me I could set up my own pharmacy with all the skin preparations I had. This passion led to a career in beauty therapy. My first role in the industry was as a beauty therapist at Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door Salon in Smith & Caughey’s here in Auckland. Red Door Salons first opened in the 1930s in the majority of the fashion capitals around the globe. The fundamental belief was that beauty treatments were a combination between science and nature in order to achieve beautiful skin. I quickly established a strong and regular clientele, particularly in facial treatments, which was my strength. I loved to see the transformation in skin conditions through regular treatments and a good home care routine with my clients.

How is the industry different today from when you started?

Beauty treatments in the 1990s were the more traditional facials, massage and waxing. Today this has become the ‘Day Spa’ and is more centred around relaxation and putting the body and mind at ease with the benefits of nourishing the skin. Cosmedicine didn’t emerge until the early 2000s when Dr Cat first introduced us to the benefits and results of using BotoxⓇ through the TV series 10 Years Younger. This awareness has grown over the past two decades and the emergence of clinics focused on cosmetic injectables and skin rejuvenation has become prevalent. Whilst day spas are still frequented and enjoyed by many, the use of cosmetic injectables has grown rapidly in New Zealand over the past five years in particular and is used for both prevention of lines and wrinkles as well as softening existing lines and wrinkles. Skin treatments have been amplified and are now able to achieve outstanding results with the use of active cosmeceuticals and ingredients that address conditions like hyperpigmentation and acne, which previously had been more challenging to treat.

Fishing at Slipper Island is a favourite activity for Nicci’s family.

You spent some years working on your own businesses. Tell us more!

I established my own As Seen On TV business in 2009 at a time when my children were still at school. Like many career women, I found it was a juggle giving time to both my career and the children especially during the school holidays so having my own business provided flexibility to nurture both. As Seen On TV is a direct response marketing model selling products through television and live events, building and establishing brands. The products that became highly recognisable that I launched in New Zealand were Zumba, Magic Bullet, Proactive Skincare and Shakeweight. Each of these product brands established itself quickly in the market with great success and high brand recognition which in turn delivered strong sales.

The significance of strong relationships in business is something that I have always held in high regard. I strive to develop relationships in the business that provide win-win opportunities for both parties. I am driven by my personal values of respect, integrity and empathy and these are a critical part of my moral compass which I place immense importance on. Through my years as a leader I have found these to be a major driver in my leadership success with developing highly engaged teams that go above and beyond what is expected of them because they feel acknowledged, recognised and valued. This motivates us to perform.

Your most recent role was with a much larger cosmedicine chain of clinics. How did you find getting back into the beauty industry again?

My previous role as Country Manager for a retail chain of skin, laser and injectables stores was my first step back into the beauty industry after some time. Throughout my time away from the industry from a career perspective, I remained an active customer as skin and the associated treatments have remained a real passion of mine.

On returning I immersed myself in the business spending weeks in stores as part of the instore team, answering phones, making customer bookings, selling skin products, and observing treatments so that I had a solid understanding of the intricacies of the treatments we offered, who our customers were and what was important to them and how the business operated. This meant I could support my team of 50+ cosmetic nurses, skin therapists and front desk team members to navigate their roles and expectations. To me, this was imperative to be able to understand every facet of the business.

What I really noticed on my return to the industry was how women and men of all ages are making themselves a priority more so than before. The first step into their skin journey is often laser hair removal with customers finding this an effective treatment that provides long-term results. The significance of cosmetic injectables also surprised me as they had definitely gained more momentum than I anticipated. Both men and women engage in injectable treatments and it is so rewarding to see their confidence increase when they see the results of their treatment.

What future trends do you see for NZ cosmedicine?

Over the past decade, we have seen more men and women engaging in cosmetic injectables and I expect this to continue. I feel developments in injectable treatments for the body are likely to be seen in the next 2-5 years as their use becomes more prevalent and the results able to be achieved are more researched and understood.

What led you to The Face Place? We have heard you’ve always wanted to be a part of the team!

Since the early 2000s I have always known of Dr Cat and the pioneering cosmedicine doctor she has been in New Zealand. She has been an inspiring doctor and woman in the industry and I have always held her in high regard. Her business ethos – only the highest medical standards, the most up-to-date techniques and treatments and impeccable customer service – is admirable. I have always lived by the mantra that anything I do, I do it to the highest standard I can and when it comes to medical care, I have the best and most experienced person I can afford as I don’t compromise on healthcare. This meant that I held The Face Place in the very highest of regard and also a business that epitomised best in class within the industry here in New Zealand. When the opportunity came to join The Face Place I felt absolutely privileged to be able to join the team. A team of highly experienced professionals who are passionate about their roles and their clients/patients in every way possible. They truly want to make their patients feel valued and good about themselves whilst still looking natural.

What are you looking forward to in this new role?

I have spent three decades in the corporate sector where it is sometimes perceived that you can’t be a successful leader whilst being authentic and empathetic. I have prided myself in previous roles in developing highly engaged teams that want to come to work and give their best every day. The Face Place has the most positive and inclusive culture. The team really care about each other and their clients, and I want to build on this as it’s unique and not easily found in businesses. Working alongside the team who are all experts in their roles, to continue being innovative in the industry, is something I am looking forward to. Each of them plays such an important part in the success of the business and together we are capable of achieving so much.

What changes, if any, will our clients see with a new GM at the helm?

Customer service is of the utmost importance to me as without patients/clients we don’t have a sustainable business. Ensuring that each and every one of them feel valued and cared for whilst visiting The Face Place will be front and centre of what we are all about. The majority of my time is spent in clinic between Britomart and Takapuna so I will be a part of our client’s journey and there to work with our clinical and administrative teams to deliver exceptional results for our clients. I’ll be very visible in clinic and look forward to meeting so many of our clients over the coming months.

Sunrise at Pauanui, where Nicci loves to spend the holidays.

Describe yourself in three words…

Motivated, caring, honest.

Tell us about your life outside of work…

My husband and I are proud parents to five children who all have professional careers. Ironically our three girls are all nurses but I haven’t been able to convince any of them to move into cosmedicine! Maybe this will be something that they consider further into their careers. To ensure I am the best version of myself and mentally and physically well I do reformer Pilates three times a week and run three times a week. This is a great balance and works well for me, enabling me to offload any stresses. I’m fortunate to live by Milford Beach and have a holiday home in the Coromandel so spend many hours walking the dog and enjoying the serenity of the water. I consider myself an active relaxer and this means I don’t often sit down but get more relaxation out of being outside, in the bush and surrounded by nature, in the garden or on the water. I find these revitalising.

Dr Cat’s News Update July 2022

Dr Cat’s News Update July 2022

Ah Paris! In my last update I had just arrived in Paris for my first international ‘in person’ conference in over two years. The Paris conference was huge this year, with nearly 15,000 attendees from 121 countries, the biggest attendance yet! It may have been pent-up demand post Covid, or the fact they moved it to Paris in the spring/summer rather than mid-winter 😹

For the five days of conference, I first attended the AATC pre-conference two-day course. The key driver for me attending this was training with some of the global experts who have been using ultrasound in cosmetic medicine. This modality is a new innovation in our industry worldwide, allowing trained practitioners to see on ultrasound a patient’s individual anatomy, before, during, and/or after injecting. It can be helpful to localise where the blood vessels are in high-risk areas so we can actively avoid them, help us understand where previous filler has been placed (along with what type of filler it’s likely to be), and for more accurate localisation of filler while using the dissolving enzyme hyaluronidase.
I am still weighing up the benefits of adopting ultrasound in our practice. While I can see it would be very helpful in a small number of cases, there is definitely a massive learning curve with training to become proficient in ultrasound, almost as much as with training in injecting. Two days of training is not enough – we would need to practice for weeks to months to become competent at it. The ultrasound machines are also expensive, and we would need to charge for the extra time required for each scan, plus to pay for the machine 🤷‍♀️ On the flip side, I see additional benefits with our training workshops – it could be useful in helping newer injectors to understand the layers of anatomy in the face and how variable each person’s individual anatomy is, as well as being able to assess which level they have put fillers into after they have injected in training.

I’d love your input – do you think it’s worth us getting an ultrasound machine? Would you pay extra to have your arteries mapped out before having filler so we can avoid the rare risk of blocking a blood vessel? Or to know what type of filler you have had previously or exactly where your filler is placed? Click here to have your say.

During the two-day pre-conference course, we also had a play with some new 3D-printed face simulators where you can inject the ‘face’ and then peel the layers back to check you have injected where you thought you were injecting. While this was fun and interesting, it didn’t really add much to my practice, other than to confirm that I’m injecting the layers accurately (thankfully, after 21 years of injecting!). Where it could be helpful is for beginner injectors who are just starting out.

It was awesome to share the AATC course with my dear friend and colleague Dr Jake Sloane, who started our ‘Hive’ of global trainers, and runs the Inside Aesthetics podcast; and Dr Rami Abadi, who is an international KOL (key opinion leader) for Allergan, and part of our Hive. I made them sit up the front with me so I could take great notes… I’m a nerdy swot like that! 😹

Then we went into the three days of IMCAS conference, where I had to pace myself to make sure I maintained my energy for the full five days. It was awesome to connect with existing and new friends from our global ‘Hive’, and a lot of the value of the face-to-face conferences is sharing ideas, experiences and research with colleagues of this calibre.

There are some new products on the horizon – some already in use in Europe, South Africa and South America, but sadly a few years away from hitting the Australasian/Pacific market. There are hundreds of different ‘me too’ fillers available in Europe as their regulations are a lot less stringent than in our market or the US. However there were a few standout innovations that will be worth the companies investing in the long and expensive process to bring them to our part of the world.

HarmonyCa is a hybrid filler with 70% hyaluronic acid (HA) and 30% calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) which is proving extremely popular in Europe right now. Used just under the skin through the cheekbones, jawline and the hollow bit of cheek in front of the ear, it has been producing impressive ‘lifting’ for early sagging, as well as an improvement in skin texture. It’s a different concept to the HA fillers as it has biostimulatory effects on the skin as well, and according to my UK and European colleagues who have been using it, has surpassed their expectations. At the moment, we are likely to have access to this product here in 2024-2025.

Hopefully before then we will have the Profhilo Body product available to treat skin laxity on the body – think jiggly arms, mushy belly, crinkly knees and wrinkly hands. The Profhilo body product is a different formulation to the one for face, neck and decolletage, with a higher concentration of HA and a 3ml syringe rather than a 2ml syringe. I actually think it’s quite good that we won’t get Profhilo Body straight away, as it means that they will have progressed in how to get the best results with the new formulation before it comes to us. In the meantime, we can still use the 2ml product in these areas, and I will be training the body areas in our upcoming Profhilo Workshop on the 18th July.

There was a lot of discussion about new forms of BotoxⓇ coming out over the next 5+years. The first ‘liquid Botox’ formulation was launched at IMCAS – until now, all of the neuromodulators have come as a freeze-dried powder that we make up with saline to get it out of the vial and into the patient. The pre-made liquid will take this reconstitution step away to save time for the injector. It remains to be seen whether this product will take off in the market, as most injectors have different amounts of saline that they prefer to use when they reconstitute the vials. Some will use a 1ml dilution while others prefer a 10ml dilution. At TFP we use the standard 2.5ml dilution which has been the most studied, but will sometimes ‘double dilute’ to 5ml if we want the product to spread more, or for an excessive sweating treatment. Some injectors will use different dilutions for different areas of the face. So the one fixed dilution with the premade liquid BotoxⓇ might actually be a drawback for some. I’m going to be watching this space though!

Behind the scenes with my international industry colleagues.

Other new botulinums in the pipeline include ‘longer lasting’ formulations (although looking at the research they are just using really high doses and freezing or completely immobilising the muscles), and a shorter acting one that works within a day or so and is gone within a few weeks – which could be good if someone wants it just for a special occasion, or is nervous and just wants to try it out. These are both a few years away from coming to us.

I also went to some of the lectures on stem cells and regenerative medicine, and threads, just to see if there was any new information or innovations that might change my mind in them. I continue to monitor these modalities but didn’t see anything this time that made me want to offer them in clinic.

The overall take home message from IMCAS was that at TFP we are totally up with the play with the latest recommendations from the world stage on techniques and preventing/managing complications, which was reassuring!

I’ll be passing on some of what I learned in our upcoming training workshops where I’ll be teaching doctors and nurses from the industry, alongside some members of our team, at our Profhilo Workshop, Vampire Academy and Hyalase Workshop. Our first Profhilo Workshop on 18 July sold out quickly, and we have an almost full waitlist for a second workshop, so if you are in the industry and interested you can book or register your interest here

You may notice we’ve had some changes in our team over the last 6-12 months, and I’m thrilled and excited at the calibre of people we are bringing to the team. We had a massive shock last month when our GM of almost 11 years, Dee, was offered an incredible role in the crypto industry – an area she has grown passionate about in the last few years – with Easy Crypto as their Chief of Staff. Dee has been my right hand and also took over my CEO role the last 7-8 months while I have been on health leave, so had the potential to leave a huge hole. Instead, she found someone incredible to replace her, who had all her skills plus existing experience in this industry, and I’m delighted that Nicci Coleman has stepped into the GM role and is already flying and filling me with confidence after only a couple of weeks. It’s a wonderful reminder that often changes brings new growth and new ideas, and I’m excited for what Nicci brings to the table.

Unfortunately at the moment, we have been hit with a lot of illness in our team – like almost everybody else – and so we ask for your patience if we need to change or reschedule your appointments. We are currently fully booked several weeks in advance, so if you are wanting an appointment, get in quickly, or leave your name on our waitlist – with so much sickness happening for everyone, we often have last-minute appointments that become available!

I finally got Covid – most likely while at IMCAS Paris, as I developed mild symptoms almost as soon as I arrived in Mallorca the night the conference finished. There had been a lot of people smoking in Paris (they still smoke in restaurants there – gross!), and I had purposely paced myself due to the long-standing effects of Tamoxifen on my energy, so I thought that was why I felt exhausted and had a sore throat and mild cough. It was a big surprise when I did my pre-travel Covid test to fly home and tested positive! I was very fortunate that I had mild symptoms at the time, and grateful that it gave me another week in the Mallorca sunshine to recover, rather than being stuck in isolation at home. There were no isolation rules in Mallorca for mild Covid, so my friends and I were able to go to the beach and on hikes to watch the sunset, despite testing positive (fortunately – it was super hot at 33-34C!). Once my symptoms had completely gone, my friend Rani and I went to Rafael Nadal’s family restaurant and had lunch there, which was super cool! The extra week definitely helped refill my cup with sun and laughter.

Sunset is the ideal picnic time in Majorca.

Unfortunately, the exhaustion hit me when I got home to NZ instead! For the first 10 days I was sleeping 10-16 hours a day, probably a combo of jet lag, Covid recovery and residual Tamoxifen effect. I also still have that annoying post-viral cough that seems to stick around!

Having Covid has also delayed my next planned breast surgery, which was meant to happen on 23 June, as my surgeon won’t do elective surgery under a general anaesthetic for at least eight weeks after someone has had Covid. This time around I was meant to have some cosmetic tidying of the breast and tummy, with fat grafting to improve the shape of the breast and a scar revision. I’ve now delayed this until next year, as I had planned the rest of this year around having surgery on 23 June!

My energy was starting to get a lot better before I went to Europe, and Paris was always intended to be a test of how my brain and body managed the workload. Unfortunately, with getting Covid, my energy has slipped back again, and I’m still limited to 10 hours a week of work, so my focus for the next few months will be on training and further upskilling our team, and getting our fabulous new GM completely across all parts of the business. I’m hoping to start doing some reduced injecting hours in the pre-Xmas period to help out the team in our busiest time of year, but also know that I am here supporting and mentoring our team in the background.

With another wave of Covid and flu predicted to hit NZ over the next few weeks, I hope you manage to stay well. Thank you for your patience as we navigate staff shortages due to the onslaught of illness. Stay well and happy!

Love, Dr Cat 😻

Q&A With Medical Team Leader Queza

Q&A With Medical Team Leader Queza

Our newest nurse has a long history in injectables that will truly add to the depth of our team knowledge. She’s even moved cities to join us! We chatted with Queza Bernardo about her training and talents as well as her off-duty life.

What attracted you to nursing as a career?

I dreamed of being a doctor when I was younger and took up biology at university to prepare for medical school. However, I shifted to nursing and have enjoyed practicing in a few fields of nursing since.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Manila, Philippines, and completed my nursing education and training there.

My family migrated to New Zealand in 2006. I visited them a couple of times until I relocated to live here permanently since 2010, so I’ve been living here for 12 years now.

What inspired you to make the change into cosmedicine?

My first Registered Nurse job in Manila was for a dermatologist who practiced cosmetic medicine as well. I would assist her in performing anti-wrinkle and facial rejuvenation treatments. I became passionate about healthy youthful skin and supporting clients with their aesthetic goals. Fast-forward to six years later, I was working in aged care and coming out of maternity leave, I wanted to find a role that did not involve shift work. I came across an ad for a cosmetic nurse injector with Caci Clinic. I’ve been in cosmedicine ever since, and I’m still loving it!

You have worked in cosmedicine for more than 8 years – what changes have you noticed?

I’ve noticed that cosmedicine treatments are now more mainstream, thanks to the “Zoom face” and social media. More clients are open to sharing with peers what treatments they have, unlike before when it was almost taboo. There’s also a growing call to regulate the industry and increase awareness for client safety.

There are clients that come in for a consultation who are not comfortable looking at themselves in the mirror when I ask them. It is always a special moment for me when they come back for a review, look into the mirror without hesitation, and are happy with what they see. My nurse heart does a secret happy dance whenever I get such an outcome.

What is your favourite treatment to perform?

I always tell clients that dermal filler for the midface is my favourite, as it gives a client the satisfaction of looking like they did a few years back. My other favourite treatment to perform is dermal filler for the lips. I’m not very good with painting or drawing, but give me a syringe with a fine needle, and rejuvenating lips is my art!

This is big move for you – what Auckland things are you excited to do?

The role is worth moving for! I am excited about the high-performance team and the culture at The Face Place. My husband and I lived in Auckland for a bit before we started our family, so I am excited to reconnect with friends from back then and to make new memories here with our children.

The family loves exploring the outdoors, whether in Auckland or Wellington.

Tell us about your life outside work

I enjoy sharing my time with family and friends. I am a momma to three children who love the outdoors and would be in a car in five minutes if I told them we’re going to the beach! The last two years have been extraordinary, but I am returning to wellness exercises that I used to enjoy like hot yoga and the odd work-out with my gym-bunny husband.
